Tuckpointing Services
Tuckpointing is a specialized repair technique used on brick or stone masonry walls (also known as repointing). The process involves carefully removing deteriorated or damaged mortar from the joints between bricks and replacing it with new mortar. This masonry repair process restores the structural strength of the wall and helps prevent further damage from water intrusion or weathering.
Many homes and buildings in the Ozaukee and North Shore area feature brick exteriors that can benefit from this type of maintenance. Over time, exposure to weather, freeze-thaw cycles, and settling can cause mortar to break down.

Signs You Need Tuckpointing
Here are some common indicators that your mortar may be failing. Spotting these early can make masonry repairs straightforward and help avoid more extensive work later.

Crumbling or Missing Mortar
One of the most obvious signs is when the mortar between bricks begins to crumble, flake away, or is completely missing in places. You might notice small piles of sandy material at the base of the wall or be able to poke the joints with a finger and have them give way easily.
This deterioration creates open gaps that allow water, insects, and air to penetrate the wall more easily. Over time, it can lead to brick displacement, reduced insulation, and potential damage to the underlying structure.

Cracks in Mortar Joints
Hairline cracks in mortar joints are common as brickwork ages, but any visible cracking can be an early warning sign of deterioration. Wider or longer cracks (especially those you can fit a dime into or that run in a stair-step pattern along the bricks) indicate more significant issues that should be addressed sooner rather than later. These cracks often result from building settlement, thermal expansion, or weakening mortar. If left unaddressed, they can widen further, allowing moisture to enter and freeze, which expands the damage and may eventually cause bricks to become loose or fall out.

Water Stains or Dampness on Interior Walls
If you notice discoloration, dark patches, or actual damp spots on interior walls adjacent to exterior brick, this often means water is infiltrating through compromised mortar joints.
Moisture intrusion can lead to mold growth, peeling paint or wallpaper, reduced indoor air quality, and even wood rot in framing behind the brick. In colder climates, repeated freezing of trapped water accelerates the breakdown.

Efflorescence (White Powdery Deposits)
Efflorescence appears as a white, chalky or powdery residue on the surface of bricks. It’s caused by soluble salts in the mortar or bricks being dissolved by water and then deposited on the surface as the water evaporates.
While the white powdery residue of efflorescence can sometimes be brushed off initially, it often becomes stubborn and difficult to remove completely. Its recurring presence is a clear sign of ongoing moisture moving through the wall, and persistent efflorescence typically indicates deteriorating mortar joints that require repair to break the cycle.
Our Tuckpointing Process
We use a methodical approach to tuckpointing, focusing on precision and minimal disruption to the existing masonry. Each step is performed with care to match your existing brickwork and ensure long-term durability.
1. Initial Inspection and Assessment
The process begins with a detailed on-site inspection. We examine the entire brick surface, assess the condition and depth of mortar deterioration, check for any structural concerns, and document the areas needing work. This allows us to provide an accurate scope and estimate.
2. Surface Preparation and Old Mortar Removal
Using specialized grinders and hand tools, we carefully remove the damaged mortar to a deeper uniform depth (a minimum of 1 inch, exceeding the industry standard of 3/4 inch) while taking care to avoid any damage to the surrounding bricks. Protective coverings are placed on nearby areas to keep the workspace clean.
3. Matching and Mixing New Mortar
We custom-mix new mortar on site to match the existing as closely as possible in color, texture, and composition. Most projects use Type N mortar with added color pigments to achieve a close visual blend. When a more precise match is required—such as for historic properties—we perform a full mortar analysis or create test samples to refine the color as closely as possible and help the repaired areas integrate seamlessly with the original brickwork.
4. Precision Tuckpointing Application
We thoroughly clean the joints beforehand, removing all dust, loose debris, and old material to ensure proper adhesion and a strong, lasting bond. Fresh mortar is then firmly packed into the cleaned joints. Once the mortar begins to set, we tool the surface to create the desired joint profile, typically concave or flush, or as needed for the project.
5. Final Cleanup and Final Inspection
At the end of the project, we thoroughly clean the work area, removing all debris, dust, and excess mortar. We then conduct a final walkthrough to review the completed repairs, ensure everything meets expectations, and confirm the job is finished to our standards.
