Chimney Inspections

A sound chimney keeps your home safe and your heating system working right. Without regular inspections, two common problems can develop quietly and cause trouble. Water often finds its way in through small cracks, missing mortar, or damaged flashing, leading to leaks that rot wood, grow mold, or weaken walls and ceilings over time. At the same time, the chimney must carry smoke, carbon monoxide, and other gases safely outside. Blockages, cracks, or heavy buildup can stop that flow, letting dangerous gases build up indoors. Regular checks help catch these issues early so your home stays protected and your system runs safely.

Types of Chimney Inspections

We offer two main levels of chimney inspections based on standard industry guidelines. Each level fits different needs and situations.

Level 1 – Basic Visual Inspection

This is the standard routine check that covers all readily accessible parts of the chimney without moving anything or using special tools. We examine:

  • Fireplace opening, firebox, damper, and smoke shelf
  • Visible lower flue interior
  • Exterior chimney including masonry, crown, cap, and flashing
  • Any clear signs of damage, chimney leaks, or animal presence

This level is usually the right choice for annual maintenance on a regularly used chimney with no recent changes or reported problems. It confirms the visible parts look safe for normal use. If we notice issues like cracks or water damage in these areas, we can provide guidance on chimney services to address them promptly.

Level 2 – Detailed Inspection

This more thorough inspection includes everything from Level 1 plus deeper checks to find hidden issues. We examine:

  • Full video camera view of the entire flue interior
  • Chimney liner condition and smoke chamber
  • Accessible sections of the attic around the chimney chase
  • Connected appliances if relevant
  • Creosote buildup, blockages, cracks, or other internal concerns

This level is typically recommended when buying or selling a home, after a chimney fire, major weather event, following renovations, new appliance installation, when there is poor draft, unusual odors, or when something unexpected shows up during a basic visual inspection.

Why Chimney Inspections Matter

Chimneys play a critical role in safely removing smoke, heat, and combustion gases from your home, but they face constant exposure to weather, temperature changes, and use over time. Without regular inspections, small issues can quietly worsen, leading to reduced performance, higher safety risks, or expensive damage down the line. Staying on top of inspections helps prevent chimney fires, keeps harmful gases from backing up into living spaces, protects against water intrusion that can cause rot or mold, maintains better airflow for cleaner and more efficient burns, and preserves the overall strength of the chimney structure. In short, they give you confidence that your system remains reliable and your home stays protected year after year.

Our Chimney Inspection Process

We follow a clear step by step approach to ensure a thorough review of your chimney.

1. Initial Exterior Review

We begin outside by looking over the chimney crown, masonry, flashing, and cap. This step identifies cracks, loose bricks, water damage, or points where animals might enter.

2. Fireplace and Interior Check

Next, inside the home, we examine the firebox, hearth, damper, and smoke chamber. We look for signs of wear or anything that might affect safe operation.

3. Internal Flue Examination (As Necessary)

If anything looks out of place during the exterior review or interior check, we perform an internal camera inspection. Using specialized tools, we examine the flue lining for cracks, obstructions, or other hidden concerns to get a complete view of areas that cannot be seen otherwise.

4. Full Assessment and Report

Finally, we compile our findings and share them with you in simple terms. You get a clear summary of the chimney’s condition, any suggested actions, and responses to your questions. If any work needs to be performed, we provide a free estimate so you know your options without any pressure.
